CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Maybe I want you to remember me a little.

GRANDMA’S TOO TIRED to do much the next morning, so I munch on cereal and we spend some calm time chatting. Even though she’s taking it easy, I can tell she wants to nap pretty early on. Weird, she wasn’t out talking to Florian all that long. Maybe a week of company’s tired her out. Next time I’ll shorten the trip to a long weekend or something.

There it is again. The idea of coming back. I always sort of assumed this would be a one-time thing. Maybe I’ll feel that way again when I get back home.

But here, this morning, it feels weird to think I’ve only got one more night of cool summer breezes and cicadas. One more morning of waking up to clear sunlight and birdsong. One more day of Grandma’s cooking, her company, and treasure-hunting with Eden.

Eden. Of course, she’s on my mind. How can she not be? I’ve gotten crushes on tourists before, so maybe I shouldn’t be making such a big deal about things. But it’s never been like this. Maybe it’s because I’m the one doing the leaving this time. Then again, maybe it’s just because it’s Eden. I meant it, back at the treehouse, when I told her I’ve never met anyone like her before.

I’m going to miss her.

If I’m going to leave, though, I want to leave our time together on a good note. I want it to be something amazing, something Eden will never forget. Something like, for example, finding two treasures in one week.

So when Grandma finally goes down for a nap and I meet Eden at the bridge, my first words to her are, “Let’s go back to the cave.”

Eden blinks at me, all startled like a cute owl. “Huh?”

“I mean—” Trying to explain my thought process feels too hard, especially when some of those thoughts are honestly too embarrassing to say out loud. “I had a good feeling about it. I want to check there again.” I grin. “I’ve enjoyed the grand tour and all, but I think the cave is the way to go.”

“I don’t know… Why don’t we go back to the amphitheater instead?”

I give her my sassiest look. “Is that the one where I’m least likely to fall to my death?”

Eden scowls. Shit, she’s serious. “Don’t joke about that! I would’ve felt so bad if… if something happened.”

“Whoa, hey.” I put a hand on her shoulder. She’s wearing a checked dress with thin cloth straps tied at her neck, and her bare shoulders are warm from the sun. “I’m sorry I scared you.”

I want to crack a joke or something. But she’s taking this seriously, so I guess I have to, too. She looks tired. Hell, did she lose sleep over all that? A pang of guilt curls in my gut.

“Look. Let’s go back to the cave.” She opens her mouth to argue, and I hold up my hands defensively. “I promise, I’ll be so careful you won’t have to worry about a thing.
